Thursday Crit

So on Thursday I had to crit 3 people, they were Zoe Philips, Grace Kung and Ye jin Yoon and they all did laser cutting.

Ye Jin's lamp was incredible! It didnt look like a lamp at all, Chirag actually thought it was a building because he didnt know their brief was to make a lamp!. Her theory was the serene feeling of being under the trees (the park near vector arena) and the way light is filtered through the trees and the shape of the shadows it makes. It was a large geometric shape with rectangular holes all throughout the object. Then for a few she had long rectangular tube that looked like tunnels. When I asked if she cut out the holes in a certain order or whether there was any meaning in the arrangment Ye Jin said the holes were random and "represented branches in a tree". She also stated Zaha Hadid had influenced her design.

Grace's lamp looked really different to Ye Jin's, whereas Ye Jin made hers out of hard cardboard Grace used perspex. She based it on the same area as Ye Jin's, the park near vector. She looked into the way light hits a window and the way it diffuses and spreads out- the effects of light. The different sections in her lamp represent multiple windows and "tunnelling", and she wanted to especially look at creating different textures and light intensities. I found it quite interesting how the whole structure slanted down, which made it visually appealing. The multitude of tiny holes also captured my attention and I especially liked it how some areas had a mass of holes whereas others did not have any.

Unfortunatley Zoe friends dad passed away and was too busy so couldnt laser cut anything. However we went on her blog and and she showed me what her ideas were. Her site was the construction site beside the park in front of vector arena, and her concept that went with it was the idea of the parasitic nature of the new buildings eating the old buildings. She showed me some photos she had gathered of the concept of "Parasitism".

I tried to post my blog address on their blog, however I could not figure out how to do this. I think I may need to sign up to tumblr first?
